Out in nature

With scenic countryside round every corner, Funen definitely lives up to its description as “the Garden of Denmark” – and West Funen is no exception. And whether the beauty is made by man or nature makes no difference, of course.

The impressive landscape of the Helnæs peninsula is definitely worth visiting. The first natural feature one encounters is the Bobakkerne hills, which are blanketed with colourful flowers in the summer. The hills also afford lovely views in every direction. Hiking through the Helnæs pastureland is also possible. Further south on the peninsula is the vast meadowland known as Maden, west of the village of Helnæs.
Helnæs lighthouse is right on the Little Belt coast. North of Helnæs is Feddet, which also has a fine bathing beach.

Much of West Funen is woodland, mostly comprising deciduous beech, ash and oak forests. Take a rewarding walk in Krengerup Woods, three kilometres north of Glamsbjerg, along signposted trails.
An old rural garden in Gummerup presents traditional rural gardening culture, as well as inspiration for re-laying and rejuvenating an old garden.
West Funen’s regional museum Hjemstavnsgård still has the old farmstead’s original flower garden, not to mention the “Wise Woman’s Garden” with its selection of 23 different medicinal plants and herbs.
Other activities include a stroll around the woodland lake in Assens’ woods, a game of chess on the giant outdoor chessboard, a game of pétanque on the pétanque court or a visit to Assens’ Mini-Village.
West Funen’s coastline is 80–90 kilometres long and has plenty of inviting bathing beaches for you to enjoy, such as Sandager Næs, Saltofte, Sønderby Klint, Brydegård and Damsbo.
The Jordløse Bakker hills are also an inviting nature area for hiking in splendid countryside and for enjoying the flora and fauna along the way.
For woods and seashore hikes, go for a walk in the woods around Damsbo with inviting strolls among lovely beech trees and along Helnæs bay.
A few burial mounds are located south of Jordløse. One of them, Gisselhøj, has a splendid view across Helnæs bay.
