Assens the Heart of Denmark

This Southwest Funen municipality is nestled like a gem at the heart of Denmark, cloaked in scenic beaches, woods and countryside. You can get to the hilly landscapes from both sea and land, where you will find attractive recreational activities and fishing, as well as the opportunity to explore age-old culture preserved in the region at churches, manor houses, castles, museums and cobbled streets in the town of Assens, lauded as one of the loveliest towns in Denmark. If you prefer development and innovation, Assens also has interesting waterfront activities, a lively retail trade and manufacturing sector, and the construction of interesting new neighbourhoods in Assens and other towns and villages within the municipality.
Children and adults alike will enjoy the splendid countryside and scenery, from the raised area of Funen (Højfyn) – the green heart of the island – and the Jordløse Bakker hills, to child-friendly bathing beaches, maritime activities, guided tours and the maritime sports centre. Or go exploring on your own, from Sandager in the north, through Aborg and Assens, to Baagø Island, the idyllic fishing hamlet of Torø Huse with its Torø Island, the Helnæs peninsula with its unique landscape and artist colony, the old fishing hamlet of Brunshuse and Løgismose in the south.
There are also activities and experiences on offer in the countryside, including the rural agricultural museum in Gummerup, a demonstration flax-weaving museum and the Škoda Museum at Krengerup Manor, an automobile collection at Vedstaarup Teglværk and a brickworks museum in Lilleskov. There are unique village, rural and farm shops where you can buy fruit, vegetables, meat and many other interesting items.
It is possible to ride a railbike, play golf, go hiking or cycling, see antiques, second-hand items and art, reptiles, amphibians, insects and birds, or visit an indoor swimming pool or an open-air theatre on Frøbjerg, Funen’s former beacon hill.

All this and much more are quickly accessible from most places in Denmark, whether you arrive by sailing boat, by car or using one of the many bus connections transecting the municipality.
Enjoy a brief visit or make use of the wide range of campsites and accommodation venues at youth hostels, holiday homes, B&Bs, inns and hotels for a rewarding lengthier stay to experience a charming village environment and rural charm. Assens is also a fine base for exploring and experiencing the entire island of Funen and Southern Jutland.
