Municipal Assens - City Walk - Guide service

March 20, 2017

Assens was granted a municipal charter in 1524. In Medieval times, the town was the main crossing point to Schleswig and a traffic hub between Copenhagen and Hamburg. Vor Frue Kirke (the Church of Our Lady) with its octagonal tower dates from the 15th century. In the 19th century, the town was developed in earnest, gaining a proper harbour and a railway link. During that period, trade developed, too, with industrious families in successful merchant houses. The scandal of Harald Plum,
who was behind the crash of Denmark’s Landsmandsbank in 1929, and who subsequently committed suicide on the island of Thorø, is part of our local history. The Tourist Information Office can supply a map and guide for a self-guided tour of this
beautiful old market town - Take a tour of Assens and discover the old market town.
